SPECIMEN
In SPECIMEN, Katarina Matiasek stages the video image with reference to the scientific photographic image. The work relates to the first scientific book made exclusively using photographic technology, the botanist Anna Atkins' study 'Cyanotypes of British Algae' from the dawn of the 19th century. The video work SPECIMEN shows an album sheet undergoing latent, even successive changes, which are almost beyond the threshold of our perception. Instead of effecting the figuration of the (reproduced) form, however, these changesĀ  take place within the colour and media channels the image passes through: cyanotype after black-and-white, colour negative after colour print, and so on.
