The cross-disciplinary special exhibition features modern sports and contemporary cultures of motion with a view to the cultural history of the human body. Main categories of sports (such as competition, play, body shaping) are related to dominant social structures and their historical unfolding. The exhibition explores the status of sports within debates on health and ideals of beauty, military traditions, rising transnational societies, socio-economic patterns, and between work and leisure. Focussing on modern sports from the end of the 19th century to the present, the presentation includes material objects, new media installations as well as contemporary works of art, and engages the visitor in sportive interaction.
